About Franz Beckenbauer
From 1965 through 1977, he was a legendary sweeper for West Germany's national team. From 1964 through 1977, he spent the most of his club career with Bayern Munich, participating in 427 appearances. Following his retirement, he managed the team for a period.
Franz Anton Beckenbauer is a former professional German football player and coach. During his playing career, he was nicknamed Der Kaiser for his elegant style, dominance and leadership on the pitch, and also because his first name "Franz" was reminiscent of emperor of Austria. He is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. As an all-rounder starting out in midfield, Beckenbauer has made a name for himself in midfield. He is often credited with inventing the role of a modern sweeper. Twice named best player in Europe, Beckenbauer 103 has made appearances for West Germany and has appeared in three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships. He is one of three men, along with Brazilian Mário Zagallo and French Didier Deschamps to have won the World Cup as a player and coach; he won the World Cup trophy as captain in 1974 and repeated that feat as manager in 1990.
