Imelda Mary Higham, known by her stage name Imelda May, is an Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Although best known as a singer, she also plays bodhrán, guitar, bass and tambourine. Described as "a unique vocal talent", May is known for her renaissance rockabilly style of music and has also been compared to female jazz musicians like Billie Holiday. Born and raised in Dublin's The Liberties district, May began her musical career at the age of 16 performing with several local bands and musicians. She formed her own group in 2002 and released her first studio album, No Turning Back. After her debut, May moved to London with her husband, then guitarist Darrel Higham. After appearing on the Later music show ... with Jools Holland in 2008, she released her second studio album, Love Tattoo. She has collaborated and toured with several artists after her release.
