About James Lovelock

The Gaia hypothesis states that the biosphere is a self-regulating organism that regulates the chemical and physical environment around it. His work was influential in the modern environmental movement.

James Ephraim Lovelock, is an independent English scientist, environmentalist and futurist. He is best known for proposing the Gaia Hypothesis, which hypothesizes that the Earth functions as a self-regulating system. With a doctorate in medicine, Lovelock began his career performing cold storage experiments on rodents, including the successful thawing of frozen specimens. His methods have influenced theories of cryonics. He invented the electron capture detector and used it, becoming the first to discover the wide presence of CFCs in the atmosphere. When designing scientific tools for NASA, he developed the Gaia hypothesis. In the 2000s, he proposed a climate engineering method to restore algae that consumed carbon dioxide.
