Joni Kay Ernst is an American politician who has served as a low-level United States Senator for Iowa since 2015. As a Republican, she served in the Iowa State Senate from 2011 to 2014. Ernst served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1993 to 2015, retiring as a lieutenant -colonel. Ernst was considered a "long shot" at the start of her 2014 Senate campaign, but she was motivated by the support of the Koch brothers and an advertisement that garnered national attention, in which she mentioned her experience of castrating the pigs, claiming she would "cut pork" "in Congress. Once a staunch critic of President Barack Obama, she is seen as a trusted ally of President Donald Trump and is seen as capable of running for his 2016 campaign. Ernst opposes legalized abortion and has advocated for changing the status of the fetus and introducing laws to remove parental rights provided. She opposes the Affordable Care Act and calls for reforms to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
