He was the first player to take 400 Test wickets and score 5,000 Test runs, making him one of cricket's greatest all-rounders. During his career, he set the all-time records for career Test wickets and career ODI wickets, although both records were eventually broken.

He retired in 1994, holding the world record for most cricket matches in cricket competition, the record was then broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000.
