Matthew Abram Groening is an American painter, writer, producer, and animator. He is the author of the comics Life in Hell and TV series The Simpsons, Futurama and Disenchantment. The Simpsons is the longest-running American television series in history and the oldest animated and comedy series in the United States. Groening sold his first professional cartoon, Life in Hell, to the pioneer Wet magazine in 1978. At its peak, the animation appeared in 250 weekly newspapers. Life in Hell caught the attention of James L. Brooks. In 1985, Brooks contacted Groening with an offer to animate the Fox variety show The Tracey Ullman Show. Brooks originally wanted Groening to adapt his Life in Hell characters for the series.
