Melanie Richards Griffith is an American actress and film producer. She began her career in the 1970s, appearing in several independent horror films before achieving great success in the mid-1980s. Born in New York City with actress Tippi Hedren and advertising director Peter Griffith, she mainly grew up in Los Angeles, where she graduated from the Hollywood Professional School at the age of 16. In 1975, 17-year-old Griffith appeared opposite Gene Hackman in Arthur Penn's film noir Night Moves. She later rose to prominence for playing an actor in porn movies in Brian De Palma's horror film Body Double, which won her the National Film Critics Association award. Griffith's subsequent performance in the comedy Something Wild received critical acclaim before being chosen as a Working Girl in 1988, earning her an Oscar nomination.
