Patrick Joseph Kennedy II is an American politician and mental health advocate. From 1995 to 2011, he was a Democrat of the US House of Representatives for Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District. He is the founder of the Kennedy Forum, a former member of the Presidential Committee on Drug Addiction and Opioid Crisis, and a co-founder of One Mind. A member of the Kennedy family, he is the youngest and second son of longtime Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy and the grandson of former US President John F. Kennedy. At the time of his father's death in late August 2009, Patrick was the last member of the Kennedy family to hold the elected office in Washington. After deciding not to run in 2010 and resigning the following year, it was the first time no members of the Kennedy family had been elected since 1947
