About Pervez Musharraf
In a military coup d'état in Pakistan in 1999, he seized control as a four-star general and politician. From 2001 to 2008, he served as Pakistan's 10th President.
Pervez Musharraf is a retired Pakistani politician and four-star general who became Pakistan's tenth president after the military successfully took over the federal government in 1999. He was president for five years from 2001 to 2008, date which he resigned to avoid dismissal. Born in Delhi under the British Raj, Musharraf grew up in Karachi and Istanbul. He studied mathematics at the Forman Christian College in Lahore and also trained at the Royal College of Defense Studies in England. Musharraf entered the Pakistan Military Academy in 1961 and assumed charge of the Pakistan Army in 1964, playing an active role in the Afghan Civil War. Musharraf acted during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War as a lieutenant. During the 1980s he commanded an artillery brigade. In the 1990s, Musharraf was promoted to major general and assigned to an infantry division, then commanding the Special Service Group.
