Sir Richard Starkey, better known as Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer, songwriter and actor who made international fame in the 1960s as the drummer for The Beatles. He sometimes leads with the band, usually one song per album, including "Yellow Submarine", "With a Little Help from My Friends" and their cover "Act Natural". He also wrote and sang the Beatles songs "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden", and is credited as a co-author. Starr suffered from life-threatening illnesses as a child, with a long hospital stay. He briefly held a position at British Rail before learning as a mechanic at an equipment manufacturer in Liverpool. Soon after, he became interested in the British skating craze and developed a passionate admiration for the genre.
