She began her acting career after graduating from high school in theater productions in New York City before starring in the shorts American Gothic and Jack & Jill. She later appeared in comedies such as What Women Want and Down with Love, and dramas like Path to War and The Notorious Bettie Page. From 2006 to 2007, she played Harriet Hayes in the NBC comedy-drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, for which she received her first Golden Globe nomination. In 2008, Paulson played Ellen Dolan in the black superhero film The Spirit.
