Tarja Kaarina Halonen is a Finnish politician who was the 11th President of Finland, and the first woman to hold this post, from 2000 to 2012. She first rose to fame. Way is a lawyer for the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions, and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and member of Helsinki City Council. Halonen was a member of the Social Democratic Party in parliament from 1979 until his election as President in 2000. She was also Minister in the Ministry of Social and Health from 1987 to 1990, Justice Minister from 1990 to 1991, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 2000. Halonen was an extremely president. well-known, with her approval rate as high as 88%. in December 2003. She was re-elected in 2006, beating National Coalition Party candidate Sauli Niinistö in the second round by 51% to 48%.
