Mariel Margaret Hamm-Garciaparra is a retired American professional footballer who has won Olympic gold twice and the FIFA Women's World Cup twice. Recognized as a soccer icon, she played as a forward for the United States Women's National Football Team from 1987 to 2004. Hamm is the face of the American Women's Football Association, the premier women's professional football tournament in the United States, where she performed for Washington Freedom from 2001 to 2003. She played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels Women's Football Team and helped the team win four straight NCAA Division I Women's Championship titles. During her tenure with the national team, Hamm participated in four FIFA World Cup women's tournaments: opening in 1991 in China, 1995 in Sweden, 1999 and 2003 in the United States. She led the team to three Olympic Games, including: 1996 in Atlanta, 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens.
