Ladda Tammy Duckworth is a retired US politician and Lieutenant Colonel of the US National Guard, who has been a young US Senator since 2017. As a member of the Democratic Party, Ms. representing Illinois District 8 in the US House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017. Duckworth trained at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and George Washington University. A veteran of the Iraq War, she served as a helicopter pilot for the United States Army. In 2004, after her helicopter was hit by a rocket grenade from Iraqi rebels, she suffered serious injuries, causing her to lose both legs and some mobility in her arms. She was the first woman with a double pair in the war. Despite serious injuries, she applied for and was granted a medical exemption that would allow her to continue serving in the Illinois Army National Guard until her retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 2014.
