El Tel was a professional midfielder who played from 1960 to 1976, most notably for Chelsea at the start of his career.

Terence Frederick Venables, commonly known as "El Tel", is a former English football player, manager and author. During the 1960s and 1970s, he played for various clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers, and won twice for England. As club manager, Venables won the second division championship with Crystal Palace in 1979. He reached the FA Cup final in 1982 against Queens Park Rangers and won the second division in 1983. With Barcelona he won La Liga in 1985 and reached the European Cup final in 1986. He led Tottenham Hotspur to the FA Cup championship in 1991. He also managed Middlesbrough and Leeds United. As the coach of the England national team from 1994 to 1996, he reached the semi-finals of the European Championship in 1996 and led the Australian team from 1997 to 1998
